University Medical Center surgeon Dr. Salvador Saldivar is one of the first surgeons in the region to get to use the robotic surgical system Da Vinci 5 to care for his patients.
“It’s a great honor to be the first to use this technology not only in the southwest but here in El Paso. What this means to our patients is that it offers all minimally invasive procedures,” Dr. Salvador Saldivar, surgeon at UMC said.
The new cutting-edge system is a big step up in AI/Robotic surgical procedures, as it is faster, less invasive and easier for surgeons to use as well.
“So this robotic platform allows the surgeon to operate close to the patient in a surgical console…not hovering over the patient. What it means to the surgeon is that it’s better ergonomically, [so] you are able to do more cases in a day,” Saldivar said. “It almost mimics human motion…I’m able to sit straight on the console instead of leaning forward.”
The Da Vinci 5 console features a seating for the surgeon and a computer with a mouse to perform the procedures.
“The benefit for the patient using this robotic DaVinci five is that…the procedure was about an hour and 20 minutes, and the patient is now in recovery and will be going home today,” Saldivar said.
