As El Paso continues to grow, so does the need for accessible, specialized healthcare. UMC is moving forward with several major projects designed to increase capacity, expand specialty services, and help more patients receive care close to home.

According to recent reporting by El Paso Matters, many of these improvements are part of the bond package approved by El Paso County voters in 2024 and are expected to strengthen healthcare services across the region.

Creating More Space for Patients

One of the projects already underway includes converting the former administrative offices on the hospital’s eighth floor into patient observation rooms. These additional spaces are expected to help UMC accommodate more patients and improve the flow of care for those awaiting procedures or further treatment.

As demand for healthcare services continues to increase, expanding patient capacity remains an important priority.

Investing in Specialized Care

Several new facilities are also planned as part of the bond program.

A future comprehensive cancer center, developed in partnership with Texas Tech Health El Paso, will help bring additional cancer services to the community. Plans also include a dedicated geriatric clinic designed to provide multiple services for older adults in one location, including physician visits, rehabilitation, laboratory services, and medication support.

These projects are intended to make specialized care more accessible for patients and their families.

Expanding Burn Care Services

UMC is also preparing to open a dedicated burn center, allowing more patients to receive advanced treatment without leaving the region.

UMC has already begun recruiting specialized staff and training healthcare teams for the new service. The expansion is expected to help more burn patients remain in El Paso for treatment instead of traveling to other cities for care.

Building the Future Workforce

As the region’s only public hospital and Level I Trauma Center, UMC also plays an important role in educating future healthcare professionals.

Each year, thousands of students from local colleges and universities complete clinical training at UMC. These partnerships help prepare the next generation of physicians, nurses, and healthcare workers while encouraging graduates to build their careers in the Borderland.

Looking Ahead

The healthcare needs of a growing community continue to evolve, and expanding access to care remains a key focus for UMC. New patient spaces, specialized treatment centers, and investments in the healthcare workforce are all part of a long-term effort to serve the people of El Paso and the surrounding region.

At UMC, the goal is not only to meet today’s healthcare needs but also to prepare for the future, helping ensure that patients have access to quality care close to home.
