University Medical Center’s Mobile Stroke Unit has received an additional $500,000 in state funding, a move that will help support one of the region’s most advanced emergency stroke care programs.

According to reporting by Hoodline, UMC is among three Texas healthcare systems selected to receive funding through the Texas Health and Human Services Commission. The investment is intended to help hospitals expand or strengthen mobile stroke services that bring specialized care directly to patients before they arrive at the hospital.

For El Paso, that means continued support for a resource that is already changing how stroke patients are evaluated and treated.

A Specialized Ambulance for Stroke Emergencies

UMC’s Mobile Stroke Unit looks similar to a traditional ambulance, but inside it carries technology not typically found in emergency vehicles, including a CT scanner and equipment that allows medical teams to begin assessing stroke patients in the field.

The onboard team can quickly gather imaging and patient data and share that information with specialists, helping determine the type of stroke a patient is experiencing and what treatment may be needed. Instead of waiting until a patient reaches the emergency department, critical decisions can begin while the ambulance is still on the road.

Why Those Minutes Matter

A stroke can happen without warning. Symptoms such as facial drooping, arm weakness, speech difficulties, vision changes, or sudden confusion often appear suddenly and require immediate medical attention.

The faster a stroke is identified, the more treatment options may be available. That’s one reason mobile stroke programs have gained attention across the country. By bringing advanced diagnostic tools closer to the patient, healthcare teams can reduce delays and begin care sooner.

Investment in Advanced Care

The state’s investment recognizes the important role mobile stroke services can play in communities like El Paso, where access to specialized care can make a meaningful difference during a medical emergency.

In recent months, UMC has also used the Mobile Stroke Unit to participate in community outreach and stroke awareness efforts, helping residents learn to recognize the warning signs of stroke and understand when to call 911.
