Frantz Berthaud, Senior Vice President at University Medical Center of El Paso (UMC), recently shared the publication of his poem, “Forty,” in the Journal of Clinical Oncology’s Art of Oncology section.
The poem reflects on a deeply personal experience involving his sister, who received care at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Berthaud wrote the piece from the perspective of a brother, drawing on an experience that has stayed with him and influenced the way he approaches his work in cancer care.
The publication was accompanied by an episode of JCO Cancer Stories: The Art of Oncology, where Berthaud discussed the poem and the story behind it.
For Berthaud, the experience also connects to his work at UMC and his commitment to expanding access to cancer care in El Paso. He shared that the care his family received years ago continues to inform the decisions he makes today.
The Art of Oncology section of the Journal of Clinical Oncology provides a space for creative work connected to the experiences of cancer patients, families, and healthcare professionals. “Forty” offers Berthaud an opportunity to share a personal perspective alongside his professional work in oncology.
