UMC’s Proposed Bond would spearhead the development of the first Comprehensive Cancer Center in El Paso.

Voters in El Paso County will have the chance to vote on the $396.6 million bond proposal for the University Medical Center of El Paso (UMC) on Nov. 5.

The proposed bond would seek to enhance existing services within the UMC hospital system and would also spearhead the development of new facilities, including the first Comprehensive Cancer Center in El Paso.

In collaboration with Texas Tech Health Sciences Center El Paso, this facility would supplement local cancer treatment options, which are currently limited. As cancer diagnoses are expected to rise by 30% by 2030, the center would offer a close-to-home alternative to treatments which are currently being sought by El Paso residents in distant cities like Houston or Phoenix.

As proposed, this new facility would streamline and enhance patient care with advanced technology and specialized staff in an effort to provide timely, and better-coordinated treatment plans.

In total, the proposed $396.6 million bond would seek to enhance UMC’s teaching capabilities and expand health services throughout the region as the area’s population continues to grow. $30 million of the proposed bond would be directed to the new Cancer Center.

The county’s population surged nearly 30% from 2000 to 2023, reaching over 800,000 residents, increasing demand for accessible and quality healthcare.

If approved, the bond would result in an increase of property taxes of less than $6.00 a month over 30 years based on weighted taxable value.

Residents will have the opportunity to approve the vote at the November 5 election. The voter registration deadline is on October 7, 2024.
