UMC recently announced the appointment of Maria Zampini as the organization’s new chief executive officer, marking a historic milestone for the hospital.

Zampini is the first woman to serve as CEO in the hospital’s 111-year history. She previously served as UMC’s chief operations officer, a role she held since 2013, and has been part of the organization’s leadership team for more than three decades.

Throughout her time at UMC, Zampini has helped oversee major expansion and improvement efforts throughout the health system. She managed multiple bond-funded construction projects and oversaw more than $500 million in healthcare expansion projects, including the development of outpatient healthcare centers designed to improve access to care throughout the community.

Zampini emphasized her commitment to continuing UMC’s mission of serving the people of El Paso.

Looking ahead, Zampini said one of her main priorities will be improving healthcare access and responding to the growing needs of the community.

“The top priority is always, and will continue to be ‘how do we provide access to the community?’” Zampini said during a recent interview with KTSM 9 News. “What are the demands of the community, what are the healthcare services that we need? How can UMC make them happen?”

She also highlighted the importance of continuing major healthcare investments through UMC’s bond initiatives, which support facility improvements and expanded healthcare services across El Paso County.

“Of course, delivering on the bond project,” Zampini said. “We have very favorable support of our bond initiative, and so we are going to be very focused on making sure that we deliver on time and budget and improve the healthcare service delivery in El Paso.”

As El Paso continues to grow and evolve, UMC leadership says the organization remains focused on expanding services, investing in new technology and ensuring residents have access to quality healthcare close to home.

“We’ll be looking at new advances in technology and always focused on how we get the community the healthcare that it needs,” Zampini said.

Zampini will report to Jacob Cintron, who continues to serve as president and CEO of the El Paso County Hospital District.
