UMC Burn Center Helps Patient Recover After Life-Changing Electrical Injury

Dr. Philip E. Fiddler, Director of the UMC Burn Center, talks to Javier Diaz, a patient sitting in a hospital bed. The room has medical equipment.

A split second changed Javier Diaz’s life.

While working as a well driller, Diaz accidentally came into contact with a high-voltageelectrical system. The powerful shock threw him to the ground, and a coworker quickly pulled him away from the source before emergency responders transported him by helicopter to the UMC Burn Center in El Paso.

Electrical burns are among the most complex injuries to treat. Although external wounds may appear limited, an electrical current can cause significant damage to muscles, nerves, blood vessels, and other tissues beneath the skin. Patients often require specialized surgical care and close monitoring to determine the full extent of the injury.

When Diaz arrived at UMC, the care team, led by Dr. Philip E. Fiddler, Director of the UMC Burn Center and Associate Professor of Burn, Trauma and Acute Care at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso, carefully evaluated whether his injured hand could be saved.

Initially, the severity of the injury raised concerns that amputation might be necessary to protect Diaz’s overall health. However, during his examination, Diaz demonstrated that he could still move his fingers, giving the team reason to pursue every opportunity to preserve the limb.

Dr. Fiddler said Diaz has approached his recovery with courage and determination, carefully considering each decision throughout his treatment;his willingness to stay engaged in the recovery process has played an important role in his progress.

“I think he’s a brave man,” Dr. Fiddler said. “He’s facing a challenge in front of him, and I’m optimistic that he’s going to have a good outcome.”

Throughout his hospitalization, Diaz says the care he received gave him confidence during one of the most difficult moments of his life. From pain management to ongoing treatment, he credits the Burn Center team with helping him focus on recovery.

“I believe Dr. Fiddler makes miracles happen,” Diaz said.

The UMC Burn Center provides specialized care for patients with severe burn injuries, including electrical, thermal, and chemical burns. Through advanced surgical treatment, rehabilitation, and a multidisciplinary approach, the team works to help patients recover from complex injuries, restore function and improve quality of life.
