According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), skin cancer is a disease in which cells in the skin grow out of control.
Most cases of skin cancer are caused by overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun, tanning beds, or sunlamps.
University Medical Center (UMC) reminds El Paso residents that skin cancer is largely preventable. Here are some key steps to protect your skin:
Limit sun exposure:
- Avoid the sun during peak hours (10 a.m.-4 p.m.) when the sun’s rays are strongest.
- When outdoors, find shade under trees, umbrellas, or other structures.
- Wear protective clothing, including long-sleeved shirts, long pants, hats with wide brims, and sunglasses.
- Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher generously to all exposed skin. Reapply every two hours or more frequently if swimming or sweating.
- Avoid tanning beds as they emit harmful UV rays and increase skin cancer risk.
- Even on cloudy days, UV rays can penetrate the skin. Consistent sun protection is crucial year-round.
Get regular skin checkups:
- Regularly examine your skin for any new or changing moles, spots, or growths.
- Schedule regular skin exams with a dermatologist.
Maintain a healthy lifestyle:
- Maintain a healthy Body Mass Index (BMI), as excess weight can increase cancer risk.
- Eating a balanced diet of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains provide essential nutrients for overall health.
- Avoid smoking as it damages skin and increases cancer risk.
When to seek medical attention:
- Severe sunburns can cause dehydration and shock, which can lead to fainting, low blood pressure, and weakness. If you experience any of these symptoms, you should seek immediate medical attention.
- Skin cancer includes melanoma, basal cell skin cancer, and squamous cell skin cancer. Melanoma is a more aggressive form of skin cancer that can spread to other parts of the body. Risk factors for melanoma include unusual moles, fair complexion, and health history.
