For many people living with chronic back pain, finding relief can feel like a long journey. Advances in minimally invasive spine surgery, however, are helping patients recover faster and return to their daily activities sooner.
Earlier this year, Dr. Jaime Gasco, a neurosurgeon with UMC Healthcare Partners’ Nexus Neurosciences, reached a significant milestone by completing his 300th Oblique Lateral Interbody Fusion (OLIF) procedure at UMC Surgical Hospital. The specialized technique is performed by only a limited number of surgeons nationwide and is designed to treat patients experiencing sciatica and lower back pain caused by moderate to severe spinal degeneration.
A Different Approach to Spine Surgery
Unlike traditional open spine procedures, OLIF is a minimally invasive technique that allows surgeons to access the spine through small incisions while minimizing disruption to surrounding muscles and tissues.
The procedure is designed to restore disc height and spinal alignment, helping relieve pressure on nerves that can cause pain, numbness, and weakness.
“The procedure restores the normal anatomy and disc height,” Dr. Gasco explained. “It’s like inflating a tire that’s deflated and putting the spine back into the position it should be.”
Shorter Recovery Times
One of the advantages of minimally invasive spine surgery is the recovery time.
According to Dr. Gasco, more than 98% of patients undergoing the procedure are discharged within one day of surgery. Many experience shorter hospital stays and a quicker return to normal activities compared to traditional spine procedures.
Recent advancements have also allowed Dr. Gasco to incorporate endoscopic techniques into the procedure, further reducing the need for extensive surgical exposure.
Specialized Training, Local Care
To further develop his expertise, Dr. Gasco trained in Spain alongside surgeons recognized for pioneering advanced endoscopic spine surgery techniques. He also holds a Level 4 certification through Avicenna Technical University, the highest level available for this specialized endoscopic approach.
As one patient recently shared, having access to specialized treatment close to home not only benefits the individual receiving care but also allows family members to remain nearby throughout the recovery process.
UMC is proud to partner with Nexus Neurosciences to provide advanced neurosurgical and spine services for the community. Dr. Gasco’s milestone reflects not only years of experience, but also UMC’s continued commitment to expanding access to specialized care and innovative treatment options for patients across the Borderland.
