UMC’s New Burn Center Proposal would add additional operating rooms, critical care beds, and improved burn care units.
Voters in El Paso County will have the chance to vote on the $396.6 million bond proposal for the University Medical Center of El Paso (UMC) on Nov. 5.
This proposed bond would not only enhance existing services but also increase care capability by funding the construction of a Burn Center at UMC, adding additional operating rooms, critical care beds, and improved burn care units.
This new facility would provide specialized care for serious burn victims. This center would help patients receive treatment close to home, reducing the need to travel long distances for care.
A dedicated burn center in El Paso would support current emergency response capabilities and would enable efficient treatment of burn injuries, leading to improved outcomes.
If approved and constructed, the new burn center would also reduce and/or eliminate the need for transfers to burn centers in Lubbock and other parts of Texas.
The proposed $396.6 million bond is aimed at enhancing UMC’s teaching capabilities and expanding health services throughout the region as El Paso’s population continues to grow. $24.5 million of the proposed bond would be dedicated to the new Burn Center and Critical Care facilities.
The county’s population surged nearly 30% from 2000 to 2023, reaching over 800,000 residents, increasing demand for accessible and quality healthcare.
If approved, the bond would result in an increase of property taxes of less than $6.00 a month over 30 years based on weighted taxable value.
Residents will have the opportunity to approve the vote at the November 5 election. The voter registration deadline is on October 7, 2024.
