UMC El Paso To Expand Healthcare Access Across County With Proposed Bond

UMC Staff

University Medical Center (UMC) El Paso plans to expand six locations in El Paso County to provide patients with easier access to preventive and acute care through its proposed bond measure. By increasing access to health care, UMC expects to meet the growing healthcare needs of the region.

If approved, the bond would help expand access to health care outside of UMC’s main hospital, making it easier for residents to receive health care and reducing wait times.

The facilities to be improved would include a centrally located geriatric clinic, a health center in Horizon City, an ambulatory surgical center and an emergency and urgent care center on the Westside, a rehabilitation services addition to the Eastside hospital, and a specialty clinic at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center campus.

In addition to these healthcare access points, the bond would also fund a burn center and the first comprehensive cancer center in El Paso, in partnership with Texas Health Sciences Center El Paso.

“I’m happy to see the projects that UMC is proposing, the cancer center, the burn center, the geriatric center because I think those are things that are all needed,” said County Commissioner Iliana Holguin.

The proposed $396.6 million bond is aimed at enhancing UMC’s teaching capabilities and expanding health services throughout the region as El Paso’s population continues to grow.

The county’s population surged nearly 30% from 2000 to 2023, reaching over 800,000 residents, increasing demand for accessible and quality healthcare.

If approved, the bond will result in an increase of property taxes of less than $6.00 a month over 30 years based on weighted taxable value.

Residents will have the opportunity to approve the vote at the November 5 election. The voter registration deadline is on October 7, 2024.
