UMC El Paso’s proposed bond includes upgrades to its main campus, new medical facilities, and expanded healthcare services, with a vote set for November 5.

The University Medical Center of El Paso plans to use one-third of its proposed bond to make improvements in its main campus to meet capacity needs and to have the latest medical technology.

As part of its $396.6 million bond proposal, UMC plans to allocate approximately one-third of the funds, or $125.5 million, to the main UMC campus. The bond will support the addition of four new operating rooms, a new cardiac catheterization laboratory, an expansion of 25 beds in the observation unit, updates to imaging technology and laboratory services, facility infrastructure rehabilitation, and enhancements to both the garage and surface parking areas.

These changes would help UMC meet the growing demand of El Paso’s citizens for quality healthcare. This need is highlighted by the increasing population of El Paso, from 2000 to 2023, the county’s population increased by nearly 30% to over 800,000.

Additionally, these updates and expansions would strengthen UMC’s teaching capacity, enabling the training of more medical professionals and contributing to the overall quality of patient care.

The remaining funds would be used by UMC to establish El Paso’s first comprehensive cancer center, a dedicated burn center, and six new clinics and urgent care centers, expanding access to healthcare across the region.

Commissioners approved the bond proposal in August. Now, voters can have the opportunity to vote on the proposed bond at the November 5 election.

“I think our community needs it. And I’m in favor of letting the community decide if they really want these services,” County Commissioner Sergio Coronado told KFOX.

If approved, the bond will result in an increase of property taxes of less than $6.00 a month over 30 years based on weighted taxable value.
