At University Medical Center of El Paso (UMC), exceptional and compassionate maternal care is at the heart of what we do. As the region’s first Level IV Maternal Care hospital and El Paso’s only Baby-Friendly® designated hospital, UMC provides the highest level of maternity care for mothers and newborns.
Breastfeeding is a vital part of this commitment. UMC is proud to also be recognized as a Texas Ten Step Program facility, reflecting its dedication to evidence-based maternity practices that encourage and support breastfeeding. Mothers at UMC benefit from:
- Specialized lactation support, with 16 Certified Lactation Counselors (CLC) and 1 International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC)
- Expert training, with every registered nurse receiving at least 20 hours of lactation education
- Comprehensive care, available from pregnancy through postpartum at UMC’s Women’s Health Clinics
Following guidance from the American Academy of Pediatrics, UMC promotes exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life, immediate skin-to-skin contact after birth, and breast milk as a baby’s first feed.
Every family’s journey is unique, and UMC is proud to offer the knowledge, compassion, and resources mothers need to feel supported every step of the way.
