Each May, during National Trauma Awareness Month, we are reminded of the importance of preventing injuries and protecting lives across our communities. Led by the American Trauma Society, this annual campaign encourages individuals and communities to take simple steps toward staying safe.
University Medical Center of El Paso (UMC) is home to the only Level 1 trauma center in the region. It is a trauma center that has saved the lives of thousands of El Pasoans, along with trauma patients from southern New Mexico and throughout west Texas. UMC’s Level 1 trauma center was the primary location that victims of the Aug. 3, 2019, mass shooting at the Cielo Vista Walmart. UMC’s trauma physicians, nurses, technologists, and other staff combine to be the most relied-upon trauma center in our region.
The 2026 theme, “Stay Focused. Stay Safe.,” highlights how a single moment of distraction can lead to preventable injuries. And it reminds us that focus is one of our strongest tools for staying safe in everyday life.
Why Is Being Focused So Important?
Everyday activities—such as driving, walking across the street, swimming, working, or participating in recreational activities—require our full attention, but when distractions take over, the risk of injury increases significantly.
Staying present and aware of our surroundings can help us make safer decisions that protect not only ourselves but also those around us. Small actions, like putting away a phone while driving or staying alert in busy environments, can make a life-saving difference.
Building Safer Communities Together
National Trauma Awareness Month encourages all of us to take an active role in injury prevention. Through consistent, simple habits, we can reduce risks and help build safer routines at home, at work, and in our communities.
Together, we can strengthen a culture of safety where preventable injuries become far less common, and awareness leads to action.
At UMC, we are committed to supporting trauma prevention efforts and providing high-quality care when it is needed most.
