University Medical Center of El Paso continues to redefine what’s possible in modern healthcare. With a strategic focus on bringing cutting-edge tools directly to patients, UMC El Paso has built a growing ecosystem of robotic and AI-powered technologies that elevate precision, enhance safety, and expand access to advanced medical care.
From early cancer detection to minimally invasive surgery and real-time imaging, these systems mark a new era for medical treatment in the region. Get to know some of them:
AI-Enhanced Detection with GI Genius™
At UMC’s Digestive Health Center, physicians are equipped with GI Genius™—the first and only AI-enhanced colonoscopy technology available in the region. Using artificial intelligence to analyze colonoscopy images in real time, GI Genius™ highlights areas that may contain precancerous polyps.
This added layer of detection supports clinicians in identifying colorectal cancer earlier and more accurately, improving the chances of successful treatment.
Next-Level Cardiac Mapping with Octaray
UMC is also the region’s first hospital to incorporate Octaray, an advanced heart-mapping catheter designed for the treatment of atrial fibrillation (AFib). Octaray gathers significantly more electrical data than traditional mapping tools and uses AI-assisted technology to produce detailed, three-dimensional images of the heart.
Because of this, physicians can diagnose and treat irregular heart rhythms with improved precision and efficiency—enhancing patient outcomes while reducing procedure times.
Single-Incision Precision with the Da Vinci SP
UMC introduced El Paso’s only Da Vinci SP system, a next-generation platform that enables surgeons to perform complex procedures through a single, small incision. This single-port approach offers a range of benefits for patients, including reduced postoperative pain, faster healing, and shorter hospital stays.
The technology also improves visualization and surgical control, giving surgeons a highly refined tool for delicate, minimally invasive operations.
Mobile Brain Imaging with Swoop
For patients who require immediate neuroimaging, UMC offers the region’s first Swoop mobile MRI system. Unlike traditional MRI machines that require transporting patients to a dedicated suite, Swoop brings imaging capabilities directly to the bedside.
This portable technology provides quick and precise brain imaging, improving response times and enhancing safety for patients in critical or emergency situations.
Personalized Joint Surgery with the Mako Robotic Arm
UMC further advances orthopedic care through its use of Stryker’s Mako Robotic Arm for knee and hip replacement surgeries. Mako allows surgeons to create personalized surgical plans and make ultra-precise adjustments during procedures.
By enhancing accuracy, the system supports smoother recoveries, improved implant alignment, and reduced discomfort, helping patients return to their daily routines with greater confidence and mobility.
From AI-generated imaging to robotics-guided surgery, UMC’s commitment to adopting transformative medical technologies ensures that patients in El Paso have access to care that rivals top medical centers nationwide.
