Dr. Subhasree Panchangam is a clinical cardiac electrophysiologist at UMC, and was drawn to medicine well after she immigrated to the United States.

“I grew up in India. I moved to America when I never thought I would be a doctor,” Panchangam said.

But then she realized her calling was to work in healthcare. “Really, it just kind of naturally feels right to pursue medicine,” she said.

And Panchangam takes pride in being one of only six percent of electrophysiologists in the U.S. that are women.

“I think I’m the only board certified female electrophysiologist in a 400 mile radius from El Paso.” she said

Panchangam works with UMC’s dedicated electrophysiology team in the most modern such facility in El Paso, and said she enjoys treating patients suffering from irregular heartbeats, which can lead to a fatal condition.

“Electrophysiology is about finding art that’s causing trouble, either it’s an extra beat or an abnormal connection that’s responsible for giving you palpitations, making you pass out, making you have flutter,” she said.

When a patient’s heartbeat is found to be irregular, Panchangam uses minimally invasive procedures to gain access to the heart through a vein or the artery to search for the spot on the heart that is likely causing the problem.

“Once you have the catheters in the heart, you’re using a software system, using ultrasound technology, you’re using x-ray technology to kind of get you to the spot [on the heart] you need to be to take care of the problem,” Panchangam said.

“I…am very blessed to have the support system I needed to pursue electrophysiology, both from family and at work…I think it’s a blessing and a gift to be able to serve other people,” she said.
