Celebrating Excellence: UMC Earns 2025 Gold Plus Award for Stroke Care

UMC Staff

As we reflect on another year of dedication and service, University Medical Center of El Paso (UMC) is proud to celebrate a remarkable achievement in patient care. For the third consecutive year, UMC has received the American Heart Association’s highest honor: the Get With The Guidelines®: Gold Plus, Target Stroke Honor Roll Elite Plus, and Target Type 2 Diabetes awards.

Why Is It Important?

This recognition is reserved for comprehensive stroke centers that consistently deliver the highest quality metrics in patient care and treatment timing. It is a testament to the strength of UMC’s advanced Neurosciences Department, home to the region’s only team of neuro-critical care board-certified neurologists and interventional neurologists. Their expertise supports a wide range of services for stroke and neurological injuries—including the innovative Mobile Stroke Unit, which brings rapid, specialized care directly to patients.

This year’s awards—covering the Stroke Elite Plus Honor Roll, Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll, and Stroke Advanced Therapy Honor Roll—also highlight UMC’s commitment to prevention, early detection, and comprehensive managed care.

Using data collected from January 2021 to December 2023, the American Heart Association recognized UMC for consistently delivering timely, evidence-based treatments that save lives and improve outcomes.

Strokes and heart disease continue to be among the leading causes of death nationwide, with someone experiencing a stroke or heart attack every 40 seconds. Research shows that strict adherence to treatment guidelines dramatically improves patient outcomes—and that is exactly where UMC continues to excel.

“This award is a reflection of the dedicated professionals we have working in our neurosciences department at UMC,” said Carla Escobar, Administrative Director of UMC’s Neuro Program. “Strokes are far too common in our community, which is why we strive to always look for ways to improve and maintain high standards. The attention our team gives to patient care is unmatched.”

UMC remains committed to ensuring that world-class, life-saving stroke care is accessible throughout El Paso. This award is not just a recognition of past performance, it’s a celebration of the people, passion, and purpose that drive UMC forward every day.
