How to Choose the Right Sunscreen for Your Skin Type and Lifestyle

UMC Staff

Choosing the right sunscreen is crucial for protecting your skin from harmful UV rays which cause skin cancer. Most cases of skin cancer are caused by overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun, tanning beds, or sunlamps.

University Medical Center (UMC) reminds El Paso residents that skin cancer is largely preventable.

Here are some important things to consider when choosing a sunscreen:

Essential features:

  • Broad-spectrum sunscreens protect against both UVA and UVB rays.
  • SPF 30 or higher offers adequate protection in most outdoor environments.
  • Water-resistant sunscreen typically maintains its effectiveness even when skin is wet or sweaty.

Skin type considerations:

  • For dry skin, opt for moisturizing options with ingredients like shea butter or hyaluronic acid.
  • Have sensitive skin? Choose mineral sunscreens with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide and avoid fragrances.
  • Or for oily skin look for lightweight, oil-free formulas.

Other factors:

  • For long periods of outdoor activity level consider a sunscreen with higher SPF.
  • On beach or pool days, choose water-resistant sunscreen.
  • Consider texture, scent, and application ease to suit your personal preferences.

Additional tips:

  • Reapply every 2 hours, even with water-resistant sunscreen.
  • Check expiration dates, as sunscreen can lose effectiveness over time.
  • Consider sun-protective clothing such as hats, caps and long sleeves.
  • Protect your eyes from sun damage by choosing UV protection, polarization and tinting.
