Five Years Later, El Paso Mourns And Remembers The Victims Of The Walmart Shooting

UMC Staff

Five years ago, on August 3, 2019, the El Paso community faced an unimaginable tragedy when a gunman killed 23 people and injured dozens in a terrorist attack at a Walmart.

The day of the shooting, the gunman, Patrick Wood Crusius, drove 700 miles to El Paso intending to target Mexicans at the community. The attack, fueled by hate, racism and conspiracy theories, resulted in 23 people killed and 22 injured.

As we mark the five-year anniversary of this devastating event, we remember the innocent lives lost: friends, family members, and neighbors who were simply going about their day. Families of the victims are still keeping the remembrance of their loved ones.

Paul Jamrowski, father of Jordan Anchondo, who died with her husband, Andre Anchondo, shielding her then 2-month-old son, told NBC News that he’ll spend the day “reminiscing, remembering them, the people they were”.

Jordan, who was 24-years-old at the day of the shooting, was one of the youngest victims. Seventeen of them were 56 or older.

The shooting shocked different countries because some of the victims were Mexican and there was even a German. Elizabeth Calvillo, from the Mexican state of Durango remembered her brother Jorge Calvillo, who had only been living in El Paso for a few years.

“Few weeks ago, he was with us, it was the most important day of our lives and he was supporting us at all times,” she wrote. “[He] was a beautiful human benign, an excellent dad, uncle, husband, and brother.”

On this anniversary, we also extend our gratitude to the first responders and medical personnel, who bravely stepped forward in the face of danger and chaos. Their courage and selflessness saved lives and provided critical support during the darkest hours.

As we light candles, lay flowers, and hold moments of silence, let us pledge to continue building a community where love triumphs over hate, where every individual is valued, and where the memories of those we lost guide us towards a brighter, more peaceful future.
