When Claudia Yuridia Norris discovered a small lump near her chest, she never expected it would lead to a cancer diagnosis. Like many patients, hearing the word “cancer” brought fear and uncertainty.
“It was very devastating to hear the word cancer, and one thinks that they will die,” Norris shared. “It was very difficult.”
Seeking care close to home, Norris turned to University Medical Center of El Paso and Texas Tech Health El Paso, beginning a treatment journey that would include surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation.
A Challenging Road to Recovery
Norris underwent a mastectomy as part of her treatment, a procedure that brought both physical and emotional challenges.
“When I woke up from the surgery, it was terrible,” she said. “Emotionally, I felt torn apart, physically and mentally. It was a very difficult time.”
Her recovery was further impacted by delays in reconstruction during the COVID-19 pandemic. For Norris, healing meant more than completing treatment—it also meant rebuilding confidence and adjusting to the changes brought by cancer.
After nearly two years of treatment, Norris was able to undergo reconstructive surgery, marking another important step in her recovery.
“Having reconstructed my body and my life, afterwards, I felt very secure as a woman,” she said.
Continuing to Expand Cancer Care in El Paso
Stories like Norris’ highlight the importance of accessible cancer care and support for patients throughout every stage of their journey.
Through its partnership with Texas Tech Health El Paso, UMC continues to provide advanced cancer services to patients across the region. This collaboration will also support the development of the Fox Cancer Center, the first comprehensive cancer center planned for West Texas and the El Paso region, expanding access to specialized cancer treatment closer to home.
