UMC and UTEP Partner to Train the Next Generation of Geriatric Care Providers

UMC Staff

University Medical Center of El Paso (UMC) has proudly partnered with The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) to provide specialized geriatric and age-friendly training for students. This hands-on training is taking place at UMC’s East and West Clinics, giving students direct exposure to high-quality senior care practices.

The collaboration reflects both institutions’ shared commitment to enhancing the health and well-being of El Paso’s aging population. With the support of UMC’s dedicated team of geriatricians, providers, and nurses, the training offers future healthcare professionals valuable insight into the unique needs of older adults.

UMC’s Commitment to Excellence in Senior Care

UMC has been recognized nationally for its excellence in geriatric care. The hospital has earned a Level 2 Geriatric Emergency Department Accreditation (GEDA) from the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP). In addition, UMC’s West, East, Fabens, and Ysleta Outpatient Clinics have received Level 2 “Age-Friendly: Committed to Care Excellence” recognition from the Institute of Healthcare Improvement (IHI).

These achievements highlight UMC’s dedication to creating safe, tailored, and compassionate environments for seniors throughout the region. Through this partnership with UTEP, UMC is not only delivering top-tier care but also helping train future providers who will carry forward the mission of age-friendly healthcare.

UTEP’s Role in Shaping Future Medical Professionals

The University of Texas at El Paso plays a crucial role in preparing students for careers in medicine and healthcare through its Medical Professions Institute (MPI). Part of the College of Science, MPI supports students pursuing medical, dental, podiatry, veterinary, optometry, or physician assistant programs.

With an increasing number of students applying to—and being interviewed by—medical and dental schools across Texas, UTEP continues to strengthen its reputation as a top institution for pre-health education. Programs like the partnership with UMC give students practical experience that enhances their education and future readiness.
