You might feel perfectly healthy, but high blood pressure, also known as hypertension, could be silently damaging your body without warning. Knowing your blood pressure numbers is one of the simplest and most powerful ways to protect your heart, brain, and overall health.
Why is it so important?
High blood pressure is often called the “silent killer” because it typically shows no symptoms until serious complications start developing. According to data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2023):
- Nearly 47.7% of U.S. adults — age 18 and older — have high blood pressure.
- Only 59.2% of those with hypertension are aware they have it.
- Among the adults with hypertension, just 20.7% have their condition under control.
High blood pressure usually causes no symptoms, yet it increases your risk of heart attack, stroke, kidney disease, and even vision loss.
The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that, globally, about 1.28 billion adults aged 30–79 have hypertension, and 46% of them are unaware of their condition.
What are the benefits of knowing your blood pressure?
Regular monitoring of your blood pressure can help you:
- Prevent heart attacks and strokes. Hypertension is the leading risk factor for cardiovascular disease. In recent years, heart diseases were the most common cause of death, responsible for a third of all deaths globally.
- Catch problems early. If your blood pressure starts to rise, early changes in lifestyle or treatment can stop it from progressing to dangerous levels.
- Track your health. Monitoring allows your doctor to assess if medication or lifestyle changes are working.
How often should you get it checked?
The frequency depends on your age and health risk factors. Guidelines from U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends:
- For adults aged 18 to 39 with normal blood pressure and no risk factors, screening is recommended every 3 to 5 years.
- Adults 40 and older, or those with risk factors such as obesity, diabetes, or a family history of hypertension, should get their blood pressure checked at least once a year.
Where can you get your blood pressure checked?
There are many easy and convenient places to get your blood pressure checked, including:
- Pharmacies. Many offer free, easy-to-use machines for quick checks.
- Workplace wellness programs. Convenient screenings during health fairs or clinics.
- At home. Using a validated monitor lets you track your blood pressure regularly.
