Future Of Healthcare: Strengthening UMC As A Teaching Hospital

An indirect outcome of the proposed bond would enhance current medical programs to attract medical students to the area.

Currently, UMC trains 3,200 students annually. It is the region’s primary teaching hospital, essential for training future healthcare professionals. UMC supports the education of future technicians, nurses, doctors, and pharmacists and provides opportunities for important clinical experience which is guided by experts and specialists in their respective fields.  This unique role enables UMC to offer advanced treatments and attract top medical talent to El Paso.

El Paso County voters will have the opportunity to decide whether to fund the $396.6 million bond which would support UMC’s teaching mission by increasing critical and acute-care beds, expanding outpatient services, and adding operating rooms. These improvements would create added opportunities for medical training. As a teaching hospital UMC, in collaboration with the Texas Tech Health Sciences Center Paul L. Foster School of Medicine, it provides opportunities for medical students, residencies (post-medical school clinical training) and fellowships (post-residency specialization programs) who support nurses, medical researchers and faculty physicians. UMC’s collaboration with Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso’s Paul L. Foster School of Medicine offers a variety of fellowship programs.

Additionally, the UMC Foundation of El Paso supports professional medical conferences, providing platforms for the dissemination of the latest innovations and technologies in healthcare. These conferences educate and inspire collaboration among medical professionals.

UMC also offers additional training and education for nurses to obtain Bachelor of Science in Nursing degrees with their Nursing Workforce Development Program (NWDP).

Voters in El Paso County will have the chance to consider voting on the $396.6 million bond proposal for UMC on Nov. 5.
