UMC El Paso Partners with TTUHSC to Launch First Comprehensive Cancer Center in Region

A historic step toward health equity and compassionate care is taking place in El Paso. On September 17, 2025 at 10:15 a.m., Texas Tech Health El Paso will host the groundbreaking of the Fox Cancer Center, the first comprehensive cancer center in West Texas and the Borderplex region. Located at 300 Rick Francis St. in partnership with University Medical Center of El Paso, this initiative brings world-class cancer care to the people who need it most.

The need is urgent. Over 3,200 El Pasoans are diagnosed with cancer each year, with leukemia, breast, liver, and kidney cancer rates rising. For the 83% of El Paso’s population who identify as Hispanic, the stakes are even higher: cancer is the leading cause of death, and 1 in 3 will be diagnosed at some point in their lifetime. Yet access to advanced care has long required patients to leave their city, their families, and their support systems behind.

That’s about to change. The Fox Cancer Center will bring comprehensive services, cutting-edge research, and innovative clinical trials to the community it serves. Studies show that patients treated at dedicated cancer centers experience a 9% higher survival rate than those treated at general hospitals.

“It’s not just about the people who love you, it’s about the people you love,” said Wayne Martin, a local cancer warrior. “That’s what gives you strength during cancer treatment. … I’m grateful we’re getting a cancer center right here in El Paso. People won’t have to leave town or their families to get comprehensive care.”

This is the beginning of something El Paso has long needed, and deeply deserves.
