Vaccines Aren’t Just for Back‑to‑School: Adult Immunizations You Might Be Missing

UMC Staff

It’s a common misconception that vaccines are just for kids or students prepping for school. In reality, adult immunity can wane, and serious illnesses like flu, shingles, and COVID‑19 can strike unexpectedly, especially as we age or face chronic health conditions. Vaccines aren’t just medical tools, they’re proactive defenses that keep you healthy, safe, and independent.

Key Adult Vaccines You Shouldn’t Skimp On

  • Tetanus (Tdap/Td)
Adults need a booster every 10 years and after certain injuries even if childhood immunizations were up to date. It’s also strongly recommended during each pregnancy to protect both mom and newborn.
  • Shingles (Shingrix)
Recommended for adults aged 50+, the two-dose Shingrix vaccine is highly effective (97% for ages 50–69; 91% for 70+) and may even help reduce dementia risk in the long run, according to The Washington Post.
  • Flu (Influenza)
An annual flu shot is essential for everyone 6 months and older. For older adults and pregnant individuals, the flu can be far more dangerous.
  • COVID‑19 Booster
CDC recommends updated COVID‑19 vaccine doses annually for adults, especially with evolving variants. Staying current is more critical than ever.
  • Hepatitis A & B
  • Hepatitis B: CDC advises vaccination for all adults aged 19–59, and older adults with risk factors or who choose to be protected.
  • Hepatitis A: may be needed based on travel or liver disease risks.
