In the ever-changing health care landscape, medical centers face pressure to balance innovation, access and cost efficiency. The University Medical Center (UMC) is distinguishing itself through a clear, three-pillar strategy:  access, technology, and specialization. From 2023 to 2025, UMC’s initiatives in El Paso and Southern Nevada have demonstrated sustainable growth, by expanding care access, implementing vanguard technological tools and prioritizing specialized and professional services.

Improve healthcare access

In May 2025, UMC El Paso opened its first urgent care clinic on Eastlake Boulevard—a major milestone in its mission to improve healthcare access across underserved areas such as East El Paso, Horizon, Fabens, and Ysleta. By decentralizing care and bringing services closer to patients’ homes, UMC enhances continuity in primary and preventive care.

This move aligns with a broader industry trend toward community-based, cost-effective models. UMC’s proactive approach positions it to seize early market advantage, increase recurring patient volume, and strengthen its presence as a primary care leader.

Technological equipment

UMC Southern Nevada implemented a robotic associated surgery system, establishing as a leader in clinical technology. Procedures with systems such as da Vinci Xi Robotic Surgery, offers a range of minimally invasive procedures, promoting the best income for patients.

Robotic-assisted procedures are linked to faster recovery times, reduced hospital stays, and fewer complications—improving both clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction.

Prioritize specialization

UMC’s strategic commitment to specialization focus on oncology and nursing leadership. In August 2025, the appointment of Frantz M. Berthaud as Senior Vice President of Oncology Services signaled an investment in cancer care. With over 15 years of oncology leadership and strategic development, Berthaud’s expertise is expected to enhance UMC’s ability to attract patients from beyond the local region, by supporting multidisciplinary care teams and improving patient experience.

In April 2025, UMC El Paso achieved the Pathway to Excellence designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). This prestigious recognition reflects UMC nurses’ dedication to the profession and UMC’s commitment to empowering them.

Together, these leadership moves reinforce UMC’s identity as a destination for specialized, high-quality care, for patients and healthcare professionals.

These investments create competitive barriers, increase patient loyalty, and lay the groundwork for sustainable growth in a value-based care environment.

UMC’s strategic program from 2023 to 2025 reflects a bold approach to healthcare infrastructure. Whether through expanded urgent care access, robotic surgical innovation, or specialized oncology leadership, the organization is positioning itself as a regional healthcare leader. By aligning its operations with emerging trends and patient-centric values, UMC is not only improving health outcomes, but also setting a blueprint for healthcare transformation in the decades ahead.
