Everyday Heroes: How These Nurses Earned the DAISY Award

UMC Staff

At University Medical Center of El Paso, nurses are the heart of our hospital, and for the 2025 Third Quarter DAISY Award, we are thrilled to honor three nurses who left unforgettable impressions on the patients and families they served:

  • Hugo Corral, RN III – CVICU
  • Jackelyn Castanon, RN II – ASC West
  • Rachele Vazquez Morales, RN (NRP) – Surgical/Telemetry

The DAISY Award, created by the DAISY Foundation in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, honors nurses who consistently go above and beyond for their patients. Each of these nurses has been recognized not just for their clinical excellence, but for the humanity and empathy they bring to every interaction.

Hugo Corral was nominated by Monica Aguilar, who praised his calming presence and thorough explanations during a stressful hospital stay. “He didn’t just do his job—he made sure I understood what was happening, and most importantly, he made me feel safe,” Monica shared. Hugo’s dedication to treating patients as people, not just cases, embodies the true spirit of nursing.

In the ASC West, Jackelyn Castanon provided support that went beyond routine care. Victor Rodriguez recounted a moment of overwhelming anxiety before a colonoscopy. Jackelyn stayed with him, held his hand, and offered gentle reassurance, transforming a frightening experience into one of comfort and trust. Victor noted, “Her act of kindness turned my terrifying moment into one where I felt genuinely cared for… She made me feel like family and for that I will forever be grateful for her kindness.”

Rachele Vazquez Morales also left a lasting impression on her patients and their families. Jorge Valles shared how Rachele guided his family through one of the most difficult moments of their lives while caring for his mother. “She wasn’t just a nurse to us—she was like an angel sent at the right moment,” he said, praising her patience, empathy, and dedication to both physical and emotional comfort.

Hugo, Jackelyn, and Rachele exemplify the very essence of the DAISY Award, combining professional skill with genuine compassion. Their commitment reminds us all of the profound impact nurses have every day.

UMC El Paso is honored to celebrate these extraordinary individuals and grateful for the light they bring to our hospital community. Their work is a powerful reminder of why nursing is not just a profession, but a calling.
