World Mental Health Day: Supporting Emotional Well-Being in Our Community

UMC Staff

Every year, on October 10th, World Mental Health Day is commemorated. A moment to raise awareness, reflect, educate, and take action to improve mental health and emotional wellness. Established by the World Federation for Mental Health (WFMH) in 1992, this day aims to raise awareness of mental health issues globally and supports mental health care access.

Why It Matters

Your mental health is just as important as your physical health. It affects how we think, feel, and act: the decisions we take, how we relate to the world surrounding us and others. From anxiety and depression to more severe conditions like bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), globally about 1 in 7 people live with a mental disorder.

Mental disorders can disrupt daily life activities and cause long-term suffering if left untreated, but stigma and misunderstanding still prevent many from seeking help. World Mental Health Day encourages open dialogue and community action.

This Year’s Theme is : “Access to Services: Mental Health in Catastrophes and Emergencies”. Which underscores the urgent need for mental health support for individuals and communities affected by humanitarian crises, such as natural disasters and conflicts — regardless of a person’s background, economic status, or geographic location. It reminds us that emotional well-being is not a luxury, it’s a basic right.

Building a Supportive Community

Mental health is not just an individual issue, but a community responsibility. Everyone has a role to play in creating a supportive and inclusive environment. Here’s how we can come together to support emotional well-being in El Paso:

1. Promote Mental Health Literacy

Education is the first step in breaking down stigma. Hosting workshops, talks, or distributing educational materials can help people better understand mental health, recognize early signs, and know how to offer or seek support.

2. Encourage Open Conversations

Creating safe spaces for people to talk about their feelings without fear of judgment helps normalize mental health struggles. Whether it’s in schools, workplaces, or community centers, encouraging vulnerability can lead to stronger connections and supportive environments.

3. Advocate for Access

Many people still face barriers to getting help, from financial constraints to a lack of local resources. Supporting policies and organizations that work to improve mental health infrastructure ensures everyone has access to the care they need.

4. Check In on One Another

Sometimes, a simple “How are you feeling?” can make a big difference. Checking in regularly with friends, family, neighbors, and coworkers can help someone feel seen and supported.

5. Practice Self-Care and Encourage It

Caring for others begins with caring for ourselves. Encouraging healthy routines, rest, movement, connection, and mindfulness in daily life strengthens our emotional resilience and sets an example for others.
